In February 2026, security researchers discovered that Discord's age-verification partner Persona (funded by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund) had left 2,456 files exposed on a server tied to U.S. government infrastructure.
Those files revealed Persona runs 269 distinct verification checks, including facial recognition against watchlists, screening for politically exposed persons, and monitoring "adverse media" across 14 categories, far beyond simple age verification.
This came months after a separate breach at another Discord vendor exposed 70,000+ government IDs. The backlash forced Discord to reverse course on mandatory verification within 24 hours and delay their global rollout. This sh*t is unacceptable.

X3DH + Double Ratchet
Direct Messages
The Signal Protocol. Forward secrecy and break-in recovery for every DM conversation. Keys ratchet after every message, compromising one key reveals nothing else.
Sender Keys
Server Channels
Each member generates a symmetric sender key per channel. Messages encrypt once, not per-recipient. Efficient group E2EE without sacrificing security.
XChaCha20-Poly1305
Encryption Cipher
AEAD encryption for all messages and files. 256-bit keys, 192-bit nonces, and built-in authentication. Powered by libsodium.
Argon2id + Ed25519
Auth & Signing
Passwords hashed with Argon2id (OWASP-recommended). Identity keys use Ed25519 for digital signatures. Exports are cryptographically signed and verifiable.
